Go Tap (formerly Bottled Water Alliance) was instrumental in kicking off the Manly Council drinking fountains project, which has been running successfully for the past 20 months.

Since the installation of the initial six fountains along the Corso, Manly Council has expanded this to 15, with fountains placed along Manly Beach. They will install a further three at Shelly Beach, Little Manly and Clontarf Beach.

The bubblers dispense on average 5,500 L of water every month. If this continues over a 12 month period, all 18 bubblers could dispense 1,188,00 L of water annually. That amount equates to almost 2 million 600mL plastic bottles potentially removed from the waste stream.

Given that 20,000 plastic bottles make up a one tonne bale, up to 100 tonnes of plastic bottle waste may be avoided, saving Manly Council significant disposal costs and reducing littler.

There are financial benefits for the community as a whole, with residents and visitors saving up to $5 million annually by not purchasing 2 million bottles of water (assuming an average of $2.50 per bottle).
